The soulless Doll

The Soulless Doll  (concept rough draft)

It was pure bad luck but these things happen more often then people think.  It is because the one in charge of personalities (whether you call her a demon or a fairy makes no difference to her) was in a bad mood.  Another bad mood.  It is because it is so easy to press the button that was installed to "modernize" the system (ok, so she wanted a cool button to press like the demon in charge of bodily noises had {and explains a lot...})  that giving personalities to "stuff" became so popular.  You can sometimes feel if something is "good" or not and this is because she got that darn button!

The doll was being manufactured by a lady who was also in a bad mood and cursed aloud.  Nowadays people think nothing of cursing because they have no idea what they actually do when they curse.  If they had any idea they were entering into a legally binding contract they might think twice!  But no one does so the lady cursed just as she was picking up the doll and thinking how ugly it was.  It was her foul mood matching exactly the demons who was thinking how ugly her new assistant was that caused the doll to become possessed.  It now had a soul of it's own.

It was like a baby not yet born though, the same as for a mortal baby, kind of.  You are born not knowing much and gradually learn the world around you.  This doll was the same way.  It had no idea it had a soul and how special that was.  It was in a box that was stuffed into a box full of dolls like him and in a dark warehouse of a company that was going out of business.  So its whole world consisted of a dark small box, nothing special at all.  It sort of fell asleep so felt no pain when it got it's personality pulled out of it.

See, the lady who caused him to have a soul neglected her own so much that when they came to collect she was essentially deaf, dumb, blind and mute.  They took back the curse and wrote her a one way ticket to the Dark Place.  this is not her story so we wont go into what the Dark Place is, but it is an even better story then this one is all I will say...

So, the doll who had been a normal doll, then one with a soul was now empty inside.  It was bought in an auction along with several other boxes of dolls and ended up in New York city suburb.  One where they have wealth but no manners or decency.  One where they buy the kids stuff to make up for the lack of caring, and so on...  the doll learned cruelty from the brother of the little boy who he was given to.  and this is where things begin to get interesting...

It could not quite move on its own yet but could feel the energy coming off of the mean boy.  It made him wish he was a real doll again.  Somehow he began putting it together and realized what happened to him.  The other dolls and toys were different then he was.  But he could not understand why he could not move on his own.  It was a cockroach who explained it to him.  Do not ask me how, I avoid them and dont want to hear about them so...

Now it knew what it wanted but not how to get it.  It began to have dark thoughts.  I might write of them in another story, but if you have felt them then you know what they were like and if not, I do not want to scare you since the story is not over yet.

The family began taking vacations and a strange thing happened.  His little boy who owned him began hurting animals and starting little fires, having learned it from his older brother.  He killed his first bird with a bb gun.  Our doll had no idea about it since he was now stuck high on a shelf, forgotten.  But he could still see and hear a bit.  He would listen in to the brothers talking about killing and how exciting it was.  He felt exited too.  He did not understand what was happening though.  How could he feel something when he was so empty inside?

But the brothers were very active and began killing homeless men and they were only 16 and 12!  The doll absorbed each word and felt like he could never get enough.  He did not understand what happened when he got put back into his box and stuffed into another box.  He thought this was perhaps "dying"...

He sat in the attic for 3 years.  Then the parents moved to my hometown.  He was in a new attic, unaware and thought he was dead and in the Dark Place.  Who knows how long he sat there in his box inside a box in the attic.  The doll was unpacked with everything else in the attic.  He was stuffed back into his box and sent to the vintage shop where my sister found him a few months ago.  But he was unpacked and learned the owner of the used shop was a part time witch.  He never saw any ritual or anything but she had set him on a shelf close to her telling everyone he was so ugly he belonged with her.  Whatever that means...

But she would talk on the phone to someone in her coven, I think that is the right word.  He learned about dark magic and wanted to know more.  She could feel him watching her and somehow she liked that feeling.  She did not realize he was soulless, she could feel him watching her or listening to her as she moved around the shop.  it comforted her in some strange way.  Like having a cat but without having to feed it or clean the litter box!  People love bargains and got used to seeing him on the shelf behind her.  No one even asked about buying him anymore, not that they ever did...  he was a part of the shop now.

She did have a cool section of "alternative" in a side room where you could browse without feeling self-conscious about it.  I guess my sister went there once in awhile and maybe looked into that room once or twice.  I say that because something convinced the saleslady she was a likely candidate for the doll.  Or maybe the doll creeped her out and she wanted it gone!

But she told my sister the story of it.  How the owner loved it and kept it near her in the shop.  How she would never let anyone touch it, even to fix it up like one person offered to do.  She had plans for it, you see.  She planned to live forever through the doll.

Now my sister knows I am (well, was) planning to kick off my new film company with a trilogy of terror and now a low budget horror one, she thought of this doll for me.  She came over asking me if I could restore it.  It was an ugly doll but I said sure, no problem.  She had that sort of smirk she gets when she is trying to pull something over on me.  So I waited to hear the rest.  She explained that the doll could be possessed and wanted me to write a creepy horror film starring it like another "Chucky" film.

You see, I can feel it in the closet sometimes...  a soulless doll...
