RPG Maker MV

I recently got into the RPG Maker MV and am having fun and learning a lot!  If you are wanting to try making a game yourself, it is a good option!

RPG Maker main page

The good thing about it is that it has a built in tutorial to help you get started!  I had to do some a few times to understand what I was doing, but
it is designed to be easy to use.  And it is!

My game I called Seaweed and/or Learning Curve because it is just one I made up to learn this engine.  I have many I made up that I want to learn unreal engine for but still learning it  :p  I decided to go ahead and try this and the price is ok, if you think you have a few games in you then it is 100% worth it!

It is fun to do the maps, though kind of hard too, easy to do but also easy to mess it up.  On the good side, it is easy to fix once you realize what you did wrong!

This is the sleepy fishing village of Seaweed, your home is on a nice small hill.

This is the small nomad camp to the north,  most of the people are off on a vacation because they hate fishing season!

This is part of the coast that runs between your sleepy village and the harbor to get to the main city of Ravenna.  It is jam packed during fishing season.

I will offer some advice from what I learned in making this!

1)Built in tutorial

Do the in game tutorial, even a few times if you need to.  It helps get you started and feeling like you can do this!

2)  Party Members

Keep in mind that you can have up to 4 party members traveling at once.  When doing conversations with npc's keep in mind whether or not your party is together already.

I went through the whole map I was creating and "finished" my alpha version and had my friend play test it for me.  First thing they said was "there is dialogue for people I dont know"...

insert horror music here!!!!

Man, I had so carefully planned where we would meet the 3 other girls, each  a subtle clue cleverly hidden but in plain view too!  I felt so clever and that this game would be so awesome!  BUT, then had to figure out what to do!

I began going through the starting village and fixing it, it is pretty easy actually.  You just had to insert a "check" to see who was with you.  But I had planned all of these as if the other 3 girls were with you already!  So, I decided I would fix this little town and then force the player to get the girls right away.

So keep in mind whether or not each party member is currently with the party when doing dialogue.  It is easiest to start with them!

3)  Maps and assets

There are a ton of assets you can buy to make your game awesome but there are also free ones too!  The community is active and there are free assets.  Do not feel you need to buy the latest ones!

 4) Video tutorials on Youtube

I found many good channels to help me make my game.  Do a search for "rpg maker mv" and set the filter to this year to see the most recent ones.

5)  The RPG Maker Forums

I do suggest going and signing up for the forums.  It is really nice to browse and see if your questions are already answered or what people are doing.

I will link to my development page for Seaweed, it has a link to try the alpha demo if you want.  "Alpha" means first try, sort of, so dont expect epic ~yet  :p
