Felting

Felting

I have been busy learning to felt!  Since the Kickstarter failed, I had a ton of wool and no spinning wheel  :p   So I watched some videos and decided to try my hand at felting.

I will get pictures sometime this week, I need to let everything dry for a few days before they can model them for me.  It is fun though.  I tried a flat sheet first and it came out pretty good.  It reminds the girls of the same stuff that lines their boots, and I told them it actually is!  That was the tunis/shetland batt we got from The Woolery on sale.  I hope to buy a few more of them, I liked them!

I also got some Jacob and some Shetland with the hand carding kit and have been using those too.  I did wrist warmers since I plan to offer them as a reward in my next Kickstarter.  I did one with thumbholes and one without since that is what they preferred.  It is funny, I tried to make the first one look like a wolf and it came out vaguely wolflike!  The other was the numeric dyed ones with some undyed Jacob and it came out a bit cow-like.  But pretty.  Both have rough edges for the wild look.  I will get pics probably before the weekend!

The next thing I tried was a beret.  I forgot we turn it inside out at the end and put the colors of Merino wool I got from Etsy shops that I liked least on the inside.  So it was orange then a red-orange on the inside and the outside layers were the darker colors I like better.  But forgot until the end that we turn it inside out.  Luckily one of my daughters thinks the color is gorgeous and she loves orange, her favorite color is Pumpkin so I lucked out there!

Next came a beret to sort of match the wolf west warmers and a cap where I tried a merino wool flower on one side with the leaves on the other.  It came out cute too.  I need to get some supplies to properly finish them though.  I need some milliner wire and some edging to make it look pretty and finished.

I did a short scarf of just Merino wools in a thin layer to see how it felt to do just merino without the Jacob or Tunis/Shetland batt mixed in.  I did it as a neck warner instead of a scarf so it was meant to be short when done.  It came out pretty though there is one spot where I accidentally tore it a bit as I was felting it and did not notice right away so it has one edge a bit torn by accident.  There are spots I made thin on purpose to see how it holds up over time.  I want to know that it is quality made and will last even with a thin spot.

Today I did a longer scarf.  I used the Tunis Shetland batt, peeled so it became 3 pieces instead of one thick one and laid it out as the foundation.  Next I had to hand card some more fiber since I had used up all the ones I had hand carded when I first got it!  I used Shetland since the batt has Shetland in it.  I did that the opposite direction for durability then laid out the merino in a rainbow pattern across it.  I did it thin so the natural color shows through and the backside is completely natural color.  I think it is very pretty and can be sort of reversible this way.  It is just long enough to wrap around the shoulders but not long like a shawl really.

I spent the evening hand carding the rest of a bag of the Shetland for tomorrows project.  I think I will card some of the Navajo Churro and attempt a wolf pattern mitten to match the wrist warmers and hat!  I am not sure yet if I will, I will need to see the mood I am in.  Artiste and the artistic temperament  :p

But I am so excited about it.  I plan to try another kickstarter, a small one for around $150 just to get some more material to work with!   The bookmarks I made are drying then I will need to finish them too.  I plan to sew around the edges and maybe add a tassle but the only yarn I have right now is the store bought.  I might try to make ropes from the fiber and use that as a fringe maybe…  but if the next campaign is successful then I can order a ball of yarn to use to match the colors I do.

I decided to use the sample yarn of the Navaho churro that the lady gave us to show the quality of the churro as a belt for the rest of the Tunis/shetland batt I have.  It is enough to make a skirt!  I will do it as a wraparound and do belt loops using maybe plastic  bags rolled and taped in the right size.  I am waiting to try that until I feel like I can make it beautiful.

I will do more when I have the pics, but I am so excited and enjoying it!  I cant wait until I can get silk to Nuno felt with too!

Go for your dreams!

Drowning in disgust…

Drowning in disgust…

Or rather, how not to…

For an indigenous person lately it is hard not to feel utter disgust at the events unfolding around the world.  Westerners and their level of "stupid" has skyrocketed.  It is the long term effects of their filthy lifestyle…

But the secret is not to dwell on their stupidity!

Remember all the beauty in the world...

Here is a photo we took that I use as my desktop  :p

Let that inspire you and fill you with joy and hope!

Yes, the westerners in SD have gone completely insane, but forget about them and just send love and prayers and good wishes to them all there.

Love is not an idea only, it is real and powerful.  That is why they try to fill you with disgust and hate instead.  Do not be fooled though!

There is goodness and beauty in the world.  Concentrate on that and you will find that not only have you stopped drowning in disgust but that all you had to do was stand up and what you thought was an endless ocean is just a puddle!  Keep the perspective and it will be much easier!

For myself, I find it so hard not to just "hate" all westerners.  But Hate is a strong word and they do not deserve that much of my time.  So, instead of hating them I instead love life.  That is why they hate us so much, we can turn away from hate and greed easily.

For those westerners who also fill such disgust, try not to fall into that trap!!  Stand with the indigenous, concentrate on the beauty in the world.  There is so much good happening, and you can create some yourself!  Buy a coffee for the person behind you in line, some simple gesture that will make their day!

Be good to yourself and each other, send the indigenous good thoughts and strength!  Hugs to all who need them, you are not alone!  We are here with you!

Got the Fiber, woot!

Got the Fiber, woot!

I got the fiber and it is pretty!  It is on my Instagram since my other computer that has photoshop is set aside as I am using this table for the pantry items (see instagram pics to understand  :p  )

But os happy!  My daughters said i am glowing!  I do feel blessed right now!  It is so exciting and so much fiber!!

I got one sent from my phone to my email so adding that here:

Inside the 3 big black garbage bags were 3 or so little bags.  These are one full and 1/2 bag of the smaller bags! so 9 or so to go!  hard work but loving it!

I believe these are navaho churro fleece and those long pieces you separate and use for weaving!  hard to tell the gorgeous colors in these, but very pretty colors!

I have 3 days left of my fiber art studio kickstarter, lol trying not to panic but at least now I can make some stuff to show!

Ohh, might get lucky… fiber-wise...

Ohh, might get lucky…  fiber-wise...

A lady on Craigslist has some fiber and will be in town today.   I think I will go for it!   Lol, I am excited if even one of the fleeces is good then it is a bargain.  Plus the rest will be great practice for me to card!  I know you are supposed to be weary of Craigslist ads and one I never heard back from one lady with icelandic fleeces when I mentioned I would feature it on my Youtube channel…  but this one hopefully is what it says!  she moved up here and finds she does not have time to devote to spinning so would rather sell it then try to store it…  sounds like a true sort of story to me so keep your fingers crossed for me!

I hope it is good fleece, or at least one is good quality!  the pics are pretty cool looking color wise.  but hard to tell from pics what it is like…  I will post about it either way, deal or sighs…  :p

Lol, i havent seen a fleece up close before so really dont know how they look in this pic on her ad.  looks like 4 maybe?  One looks like a blond wig almost  :p

I plan to mention at the spinners and weavers guild meeting how I would be happy to process their wool for a percentage  :p  I need practice and I am sure there are some who really hate that part of it.

But this way I can make bookmarks and maybe some little iPhone cases / card cases for the next Kickstarter attempt.  I am working up a business plan to apply for a loan to start it.  I really hope my next kickstarter will attract more then $1 :p  I will show it if it is successful that I have people wanting to see my handmade crafts!

Lol, felt like rock star when I saw I had my first crowdfund $1 support!  I was happy my first one (Mayor of Attu on Indiegogo) got $5 until I learned it was my own daughter  :p    ah well, hard work makes you strong and resilient and makes you appreciate it even more.  Knowing it was done by your sweat and your heart and your desire, will be sweet!

But this will give me a chance to break in the hand carders!  They are on the way!  What is cool is I can try felting the short cuts she said she had a bag of.  I dont mind the short cut pieces, am glad they are in a separate bag too!  I plan to try wet felting so they will come in handy for that at least.  I can see VM on some of the pics of the raw fleeces so will need to get them washed up tonight!

Lol, I watched like 5 dozen videos but that is not the same as doing it yourself!  I think it will go good!  I am sure at least one of the fleeces will be good quality and usable!  the rest we will call practice :p

but happy!  You need to trust people sometimes, even if you have a bit of doubt…  I will hope for the best!

hugs and love,

Cutest Dream Ever!

Oh man, I had the most adorable dream in a long time!  I have been feeling so positive and hopeful lately, like life might actually get better!  I am cheerful is one way of describing it.

I am interested in opening a fiber art studio (kickstarter thingy) and have been watching videos and found myself at a felt rug making one.  It was impressive.  a sweet older man plying his craft and you can feel the love!

At about 10:04 he begins to walk on the rolled up rug to help felt and full it and it is adorable!   It made me want to clap a rhythm to his walking on it!  It is true that you are never too old to do what you love and follow your dreams!

But that night I had the most amazing dream.  I was the sorceress of my tribe, newly appointed and I was creating a prayer rug sort of thing.  Instead of walking on it like he did though, I did Goddess Yoga.  Not even sure if that is a real thing or if I just made it up in my dream…  but I was doing a sort of handstand with just my fingertips walking along the rug as we went across the room and back and forth.  I did an incredible backward stretch where my knees did the walking as I was folded back stretched to the max.  I did some twirls like an acrobat even.  It was deeply spiritual too, not just fun stretching.  The Goddess and I were doing it together, she teaching me and me eager to learn and serve.  But that is how I became the sorceress.

I am happy though, I can see several costumes using the felting methods!!  I think my 4 pounds of fiber that are coming soon will be gone in a few days!  I know I want to try it all!  I will definitely card it all first.  It is 2 pounds of tunis/shetland blend and 2 pounds of wool~though not sure which kind that comes with the handcarders.

I was hoping my felt bookmarks that I added will catch on and I can meet the kickstarter goal.  But if not I will do one for just fiber, like $300 or something like that to begin creating it all.

I think the bookmarks will come out beautiful as I have the perfect fabric to use for it!  I will make a few to show what they will look like when it gets here.  It is still processing so hopefully it will come by Friday!  I am too impatient and want it yesterday  :p

The best news is I will have samples to show for my next attempt at it.  I will ask for less this time, enough for a good sampling of fibers to unleash my creativity!  So the next kickstarter will be even better!

But in my good mood I applied for some grants to try to create a fiber farm to go along with the fiber studio!  I also applied for a documentary grant so please spread the word around how you would love to see a documentary about Attu Island done my an actual member!  :p  lol, I am not sure if they will look more then a few seconds at them but at least I applied!  The second one, the film one, is a sort of "play" of a woman from Attu trying to stop her tribe's erasure!  I am also applying for an individual award grant from the Rasmusson Foundation!

But grant searching is so often a roller coaster, too many good causes and not enough $$ to go around.  I wont get my hopes up to high.  I feel hopeful though and that is a good feeling!

I hope you are going for your dreams!

Lol, in good mood!

Lol, in good mood!

I added a reward to the kickstarter campaign of a felted bookmark handmade by me.  I can start them next weekend and hopefully have one to show before the campaign ends  :p

But I am in a good mood!  I am so excited to get this started!  So many plans and things to do once I get it started!  I want to make an example of a costume and props for it.  I so hope it works out so I can get it the easy way  :p  but hard work builds character!

This week we are filming an episode for my frugal series, that should be cool!  I am excited for my first short to be finished!  I think once it is done and people get a taste of my films they will become more interested and want more…

I was watching a fashion show of felt outfits and realized I can make some for my Bride of Sorrows movies!  They say to practice the basics before you try the more advanced ones so I will be making the bookmarks and trying out various ideas.  I wonder if I can make them half as pretty as I see in my mind!

What is super fun about it is it looks like a workout for your arms and I so need that!  :p

I so cant wait to get it now though!  making test sheets should keep me out of trouble for awhile  :p

I hope you are happy and feeling positive and good about this New Year!  You can do it!  go for your dreams!

Keep the #indigenous in your thoughts and prayers!

Woot, ordered hand carders and joined the local guild!

Woot, ordered hand carders and joined the local guild!

I am excited!  I ordered some hand carders and wool from The Woolery and also joined the Anchorage Spinners and Weavers Guild!

I ordered the Hand Carding Kit that comes with 1 set of oil finished 8" wool carders 72 TPI, 2lbs of raw fleece, and the BOOK "Ashford Book of Carding".

I also ordered some I saw on clearance, 2 pound Batt of Tunis / Shetland wool!

While my fiber Art Studio Kickstarter Campaign is going nowhere, I am getting there bit by bit!

We can rent equipment from the local guild, so I will be able to rent one by the end of the month I think!  :p  So I can practice and by the time I can afford my own I will be able to spin good yarn!

I really hope the kickstarter takes off but all I get is the "marketing" people and I am not interested in that…  so think it will fail but at least I got some good practice for it.  All that means is that the Attu Series will cost a lot more  :p  Plus I dont mind keeping them to myself if it comes to that!

One thing I can do it break it down into smaller pieces even!  I can try one for $800 for the spinning wheel alone and hopefully find one locally that is used and cheap!  hehe…  but who knows, maybe everyone is waiting until the last moment  :p 8 more days of nerves and hopes and sighs!  :p

I love being a dreamer and picturing things coming easy but am used to working hard for it, so it is win win for me.  I think as long as you are realistic and practical it is really good to dream!  I think it is partly why I write!

I hope you are going for your dreams!  It will take time and hard work but so so so worth it!

hugs and love,

200th blog post!

200th blog post!

Wow, I will do a special picture for it and add it to here!  woot, made it to 200 and here's to our next 100 posts!

Thank you for sharing my ramblings!

My kickstarter has a thing to show where the views are coming from so here is a link to go view it.  can you please view it and leave a comment?  The only interest I am getting is from telemarketers…  sigh!

Please view and leave a comment!

I am very excited about it even though no pledges yet.  I heard from the local guild and it is an active one with many events planned for the near future so I am happy!!  Your help will make it easier for me, but do not worry, I will make it on my own too!  One of the first is called their 'fiber frenzy'  ~ no idea what that is but it sound fun and interesting!

I am ordering some fleece this weekend!  Not sure how long it will take to arrive though…  I am hoping before my campaign ends so I can show the progress I am making on gathering my fiber art studio!

The local guild has equipment we can rent to test out the items before committing to a major purchase so that is good!  she also said many of the members offer their used wheels and stuff in the member newsletter so I will join this weekend and see what is available!

This year is starting off amazing for me!!  I hope you are enjoying it so far too!

Film Editing ~ First Short

Film Editing ~ First Short

I am so excited, it may not seem like much but I got my fist clip of my first short film done!! My first clip was about a 3 second one but I love how it came out!  We were worried but I think it will be ok…

I so wish I was better at editing but I am watching tutorials and practicing so hopefully I can redo it again once I get better at it!  I will do some more tonight but I just wanted a break from it.  I dont want to rush and mess it up in my excitement!

I dont want to talk about it too much since I dont want to ruin it for anyone…  But I am using Premiere Pro CC and so want to learn After Effects!  But I managed to do everything I wanted  and created the 3 second or so clip!  This one is pretty easy since I will just need to apply this same thing to about 5 other clips since they are in the same vein as this one.  The other half of it will be easy too I think.  We managed to get it in a few takes so it wont be a lot of hunting and cutting to find good bits!

It was a short one and we did a sort of BTS but will do a short talk too… and a few bloopers we might add in  :p

It was a lot of fun and I am glad I am trying!  It sometimes makes me feel like I am just a dreamer that I plan to make this feature film horror movie this summer!  But I planned it carefully, keeping the idea of "low budget/no budget" in mind so it should be 100% doable!

I think the 1 problem I will have now is my studio is in my home…  I dont want people I dont know coming here so cant figure out how to get the scenes done…  I am hoping I can find a place we can do it at, I think the UAA has a thing where you can apply to use a room they are not using.  That might be an option until I can afford to rent/buy a place.

I so want to get some other stuff filmed, I have a lot of plans but I dont want anyone coming here though…  Lol, maybe just an "I love my privacy" thing but it is a choice so I will have to figure out how to arrange this!

I think once I get my short up on my channel I will create the "auditions" playlist for upcoming auditions I plan to have.  I think there are quite a few in and around town who are into films too.  I think I can find the right actors easy. What I really would love is my studio space to gather ones I like so we can practice acting as I am sure most of us are new at this.

Most of my roles are written for #indigenous so I am hoping to find a lot who want to get involved in it.  Once i have a space it will be easier!  But baby steps!  I think we can use someone's garage even but no one I know has one, which is kind of strange since I live in Alaska.  But the city has some weird rules to keep the property they own higher priced so they dont allow garages to be built in a lot of areas.  Super stupid but that is "America"…

Lol, I wont post the clip since I dont want to spoil the fun of the clip but once it is done I can do a post with it and what I was thinking and all of that blah blah blah I love to do  :p

I cant remember if I already showed the pic of her nails.   I love how they turn out!  I wanted to make them look "not human" and I think they came out perfect!

Anyway, I had a good day and plan to try to work on a few more clips tonight!

Go for your Dreams, it is amazing and fun!  Lots of hard work, but all of life is that way and why not spend it doing something rewarding to your soul!

hugs,

`Sea

First prop talk and first giveaway!

First prop talk and first giveaway!

I decided to go quickly through how I started making the props with just a hot glue gun and how you can really do a lot with it.  I plan to go through foam and then helmets, all quickly with more talk then showing, just to show what we had been up to.

My first tutorial will be one we made awhile ago but never edited.   We tried to get a lot filmed and had planned on getting funding to learn editing but ended up learning to do it myself.  So, not the greatest editing but what I can do today  :p

Man, it is fun though!  I cant wait until I get past the basics!  I think I will really like it!  I have been practicing with After Effects so hopefully soon I can make them look even better!

While my Kickstarter fiber art studio is not doing much, we are planning on buying some fleeces this next weekend!  Icelandic because I found a good price for them and I really want to try it various ways!  I want to separate them and use them for different types of projects.  Then I want to try them together too to see how different it will be.

I really like fiber and it is one of those things I wish I had never stopped doing!  But we will get the fleece this next weekend and by then I should have heard from the spinning and weaving guild in town.  I think they rent to members but I think  I will need a mentor first to vouch for me since I will be brand new.  But I expect almost all the new people need to rent and try out various ones.

If I cant afford the Schacht FlatIron then I will get maybe the BlueBonnet Honey Bee (I think that was it…  I want a double treadle so hopefully can find one!)  that one is all wood and affordable.  I will go for the FlatIron if I can afford it since it is from a company I expect tot be around for years in case I need parts or accessories.

I wonder how many others are just like me and wishing they had the nerve to go for their dreams and see this and dare!  I hope it helps because life should be lived and sometimes that seems impossible with too much going on out of your control.  I am taking back control though!  While I may not be able to afford the studio right away unless this kickstarter campaign is successful, I will get it done!  Piece by piece!

I look forward to buying the fleece and doing a video about them.  As a 'big city" girl, I am not overly familiar with animals and their  fleece.  I will spread it out on the table to show it and hopefully get it up close too.  The fleece is supposed to be very clean so hopefully I wont find unexpected 'stuff"  :p

But that will be part of my Frugal ~Unangan Style playlist, the very start of creating yarn!  I hope my kickstarter is successful since it will make it quicker and easier to do it all.  I would really love things being easy for a change!  I have to say that I am loving the New year so far!   Getting it off to a good start and not hesitating anymore!

You can enter my first ever giveaway too!  It is for the 2 hot glue masks in the picture.  follow my Youtube channel, my instagram channel and my Twitter channel and use the hashtag #SeareansGiveAway so I can find you!  Good luck!

hugs,

~Sea

Launched the Kickstarter!! Now to January 15th!

Launched the Kickstarter!!

woot, so excited!

The Attu Series has me super inspired!  Even if I dont make this Kickstarter I will be making them, so if you want one at an affordable price please get one now!  I will never repeat these so each will be 1 of a kind.

I may do another "Attu" but it will not be exactly like the this one.  I will make sure it is a different landscape or angle.  I will keep it all documented too so we will be 100% sure!  The prices after this kickstarter will go up on these so it will last 14 days, so hopefully you can save enough!

What interests me too is I added some more rewards.

Naming them might seem silly but for those who can not yet make their own, it is a way to share the joy of it with everyone!  The rolags ($5 reward)are the pre-spun fibers that have been either carded or combed.  It can also be called a batt if I dont separate it into smaller sections off the blending board.  The yarns ($10 reward) will be done differing ways so I can not say right now what will be there yet.  And my favorite new reward is to let you choose the picture to inspire the landscape rolag ($15 reward)!  If you have a picture of a special place or looking for a gift that will be special then this is it!

For me, I have a picture of my mom sitting on the grass in Attu.  The grass is short and brown/greenish, She has a light blue coat, dark pants and hair and there is the pale ocean behind her with a light blue sky.  I plan to make this one someday!  She was there for a project about picking the grass and making the Attu baskets.  I think I will spin it into a yarn to crochet a scarf!

That is what is so great about the fiber arts, it has much more meaning then "just" the yarn!  There is love and a story behind it all!  It is not something you can buy at the local grocery store!   I added some more because it was pointed out that it is hard to have $100 laying around not to mention the $500 for the shawl!  Not that they are not worth it but it is hard, I know!  it is why I am doing the kickstarter, to try to get all the tools and materials I need.  Even if I dont get it here, I am getting them eventually.

The Searean Moon Fiber Art Studio Kickstarter Campaign is live!

If you are interested in #AlaskanNative arts and crafts, like #Attu Alaska for it's history or it's birding, if you just love #handmadewithlove then please check out my kickstarter!

I will be reminding you this next 2 weeks but will label it something kickstarter so you know it is just an update.  I am so excited and so nervous!  I wanted to start off the New Year right!  I launched the Youtube channel and now the kickstarter and will have my first short film up sometime this next week!!  going to be a very good year!

Happy new Year and go for your dreams!  You are not too old, too poor, too anything!  Lets make this our best year ever!

hugs,

He Built A Bike That Ignores Physics

what a fun idea!
